Cockatoos

Less Supher Crested CockatooThere is no bird more cuddly or "hands on" than a cockatoo. These birds are affectionate, sometimes literally to a fault. If it were up to them, they would have you snuggle with them 24-7. They can be easily spoiled as babies. This usually happens when a new owner lavishes tremendous amounts of time and affection on their baby and as time goes by and the novelty wears off, they gradually begin spending less and less time with their bird. The way around this is to regulate the time you spend with a brand new baby so they don't become accustomed to constant attention. These birds are very intelligent and gifted at tricks and puzzle-solving i.e., getting out of their cages. We have had pet Umbrellas who required a padlock on their cage doors to keep them from getting out at will. They are prodigious chewers, so be prepared to replace perches regularly (and say goodbye to your furniture if they do get out). While not especially known for their talking ability, they are usually capable of learning a few words or phrases. Cockatoos are an ideal choice as a family pet in a household with multiple members who all want a bird to bond with. Cockatoos don't bestow their affection upon just one person but will accept loving attention from one and all.
