Asian Parakeets
|
Sleek and exotic are two words that describe the Asian parakeets. With their long, pointed tails and their gorgeous colors, these birds are beauties. Though not as noticeably dimorphic as the Eclectus, there are definite differences between the sexes: the ring around the neck of the male ringnecks, for example, or the darker purple color on the heads of the male plumheads. (It's not hard to see how many of these species came by their names.)
Asian parakeets can make terrific pets. The key is consistent handling when they are young. If handled infrequently they tend to revert to being wild. For the most part these are pretty quiet birds and while not considered good talkers, some species are capable of simple words and phrases. In general, Asians have a reputation for not being fond of petting and stroking, but in our experience this is not always true. The sweetest, most physically affectionate, all around nicest bird in our entire collection is a male Alexandrine. Second place goes to a female Moustache. It just goes to show that every bird is an individual.
