Africans

African Grey BabiesAfrican greys are probably the most intelligent of all the parrots. They are considered the greatest mimics, learning to imitate not only specific human voices but also a variety of sounds like telephones and microwaves. The larger, lighter grey Congos with their distinctive bright red tails are more popular than the lesser-known Timnehs, but the Timnehs are the equals of the Congos in intelligence, talking ability and pet potential. In fact, we consider the Timnehs to be a little steadier, a little less nervous and shy than Congos can be and, if anything, more reliable talkers. Because of their great intelligence, greys seem more psychologically delicate than other birds; if allowed to languish in a cage with no interaction or stimulation they are apt to becoming feather pickers. These birds don't like their routines disrupted; they are creatures of habit.

Jardine The other African species we breed, Senegals and Jardines, are sweet, quiet birds who don't have the reputation for talking talent the greys have but who have gentle, affectionate personalities. Like the greys, they tend to be somewhat shy and they prefer routines in their everyday life. As with the greys, it's a good idea to acclimate them while young to a variety of people and situations so they don't become too "set in their ways" and introverted.
